TOKYO. (AP)—Tetsu Katayama, Japanese Socialist party leader and his nation's first Premier under its democratic constitution, was invested in office by Emperor Hirohito at the Imperial palace Saturday afternoon.
Outgoing Premier: Shigeru Yoshida, speaker: of the House of Representatives Komakichi Matsuoka, and Speaker of the House of Councillors Tsueno Matsuidara witnessed the ceremony.
General MacArthur earlier praised Katayama as Japan's first "Christian leader" and saw rising in the Orient "hope for the ultimate erection of an invincible spiritual barrier" to ideologies hostile to democracy.
The supreme commander issued a statement on Katayama's overwhelming election by the Diet yesterday. Katayama, a life-long Presbyterian, likewise is the first Premier elected by the Diet under the new constitution.
