The State Prison.—We deem that no apology is necessary for devoting so much space in this paper to the subject of the State Prison. We have the facts now; facts which cannot be gainsaid.— We know what the Institution owes; how much is due to it; how much property on hand; and under what circumstances the bad debts were contracted. There is nothing behind now. Major Stinson was out of office when this examination took place, and had it not in his power, if he had the disposition to conceal the true condition of the Institution. The gentleman appointed to assist the Counsellors in the investigation, was formerly Deputy Warden, was dismissed by Major Stinson, and has never been friendly to him. He certainly had no disposition to practise a deception upon the public, in order to screen him, in any thing could be found wrong. There can be no further doubt upon this subject; and abused as we have been on this account, we feel anxious that our readers should thoroughly understand the whole case. Dishonest brawlers have made the State Prison a stalking horse for political purposes long enough; they can use it no longer; or the time has arrived for the public to be disabused; and every one who has a disposition to understand this subject, now, has all the facts before him; and should the federal papers still attempt to keep up the delusion, there stands the plain FACTS embodied in the final and conclusive report of the Committee to put them down.—N.
