I have seen in one of your papers, a paragraph, signed by Harman Hoffman, Esq. High Sheriff of Dutchess county, who says that my character is well known; to which I answer,--I am known to be an honest man, which I wish I could say the same of him; but if the public will judge by my last publication in your paper, wherein I accuse him of many dishonest actions in execution of his office, which he has not answered, and until he does, I shall not put myself on a footing with him, to answer any questions before the Governor and Council of appointment, but in case that his Excellency the Governor may think proper to call on me, to prove the charge in my letter to him, against Mr. Sheriff Hoffman, I shall then be found ready and willing.
I am your most obedient servant,
REYER SCHERMERHORN.
P. S. I should have answered the above before, but your paper is but just come to hand, as I am but just returned from Montreal.
