The National Grange closed its thirteenth annual session in Canandaigua, N. Y., on the 28th November at 7 P. M. The session was a very harmonious one, and contained representatives from nearly every State in the Union, and lasted for ten days. It was composed of live, working men, who, deeply impressed with the mission of the order, labored earnestly to fix clearly the purposes it aims to accomplish, and to perfect the methods by which it works.
The committee on the condition of American agriculture made an exhaustive report, setting forth in clear and forcible language, the disabilities under which this great industry labors through unfriendly legislation, and the want of just protection from the Government, and appealed most strongly to the farmers of the country to rally to its rescue, through the sure means that are within its reach.
The committee on education presented a resolution to the effect that the National Grange recommend to the patrons in the several states, to demand that the 'study of the elementary principles of agriculture' be introduced into the public schools of their respective States, which resolution was passed by the unanimous vote of the body.
Then some reports on transportation and co-operation, which clearly set forth the duties of the farmers of the country in an effort to protect their interests against the unjust aggressions of rings and monopolies.
Perhaps no session of this body ever accomplished as much work as the present one, and in no one have the patrons of the country manifested a deeper interest. The Federal Court room, in which the sessions were held, were constantly thronged from the surrounding counties.
The next meeting will be held in Washington, D. C., to facilitate a co-operation between the Department of Agriculture and the Order in advancing the interest of agriculture throughout the United States.
