July 27.
On Monday last was tried at the court in this
town, before the Hon. Samuel Whitthorn, Esq. Presi-
dent, and his associates, under a special commission of
oyer and terminer, William alias Benjamin Johnson,
the pirate and murderer; whose case, of immea-
surable wickedness, the public are already sufficiently ap-
prised of. It therefore only remains for us to say,
that he was found guilty upon the clearest evidence
and sentenced to suffer death upon the gallows,
where his body is to be hung in chains.
On his trial he conducted himself with such insensibility and hardness as
betrayed every principle of remorse and contrition
until the moment of his condemnation, when all his
fortitude seemed to forsake him, and he was taken
from the bar in a state of horror and desperation.
