For the Telegraph.

Mr. CLEMENT:—Please permit me to set "a looker on" in your paper of last week, right, in relation to one point at least, being one great error among others. If he will multiply the $2000 which he says is more than the amount paid for losses in this city during the last five years by insurance companies—by two and a half, he will arrive at the truth much nearer than contained in the assertion he makes. I would recommend that you advise your correspondents to acquaint themselves with the facts in relation to the subject upon which they contemplate writing before they attempt enlightening the public by publishing the result of their lucubrations. Or, if the object of the writer is to impose upon the public, I would advise that the "grey goose quill" be let alone, and that he take to singing songs, a much easier way of gulling, than putting his imaginative thoughts in print.

What he says in regard to the fire department of this city, is very true. In fact the department is deserving of much credit; the members have shown themselves very efficient—always on the spot in time of need; and should receive the countenance and support of all good and true men, to encourage them on in the discharge of their duty, so faithfully performed heretofore.

ONE.
