Full Text

Mr. Editor: Allow me in your valuable paper to say a few words to the friends of the Soldiers. They have done much already throughout the County, to relieve the pressing wants of the suffering soldiers. Their benefactions have carried joy to many a sad heart and the blessings of many who were ready to perish are theirs. But while the love to country of many, is waxing cold, is there not danger of relaxing the efforts which have hitherto accomplished so much? Are the meetings of the Soldiers' Aid Societies as well attended as they were months ago? Do all the members give as freely? Do they increase their donations as the price of goods increase? Do they reflect that one dollar only buys half as much as it did twelve months ago? The occasion calls for great efforts and great sacrifices. The changing seasons, the forward movements, and the impending battles, will send thousands of sick and wounded soldiers to hospitals, where, but for your gifts and those of kindred societies, they would be obliged to lie upon straw pallets with only their soldier clothes and blankets for covering, and only hard army rations for their food. The time is surely coming when all who have labored in this cause will be considered the noblest benefactors of our country.
