It is a source of pleasure to the public of our town to hear of the splendid opening of our private schools, of which we are so justly proud—St. John's Academy and St. Anthony's Boy School.
The former for girls of all ages is one of the finest educational institutions in this part of the country.
The value of the splendid work done by the Sisters Marianites of Holy Cross as educators has always been appreciated by the best people of Louisiana, but it was only two years ago that they were authorized and empowered by a special act of the Legislature to confer such degrees as are conferred by any college or seminary in the United States.
This is of great value to the students, as heretofore the graduates going to any of our state institutions were forced to pass an examination, now their credits entitle them to enter without any such formality.
There are many more than 100 girls, and about half as many small boys attending these schools besides there is a fine boarding department for girls, and the musical advantages are of such a high class that they cannot be excelled anywhere in the State.
