Full Text

Accident. The Newark Centinel gives the following account of the manner in which the late celebration closed in that town:—“During the evening, in the Military Garden where the fire works had been prepared, a very serious and alarming occurrence took place, which greatly damped the amusements of the evening. In the very outset of exhibiting the fire-works, surrounded by a numerous collection of ladies and gentlemen, the rockets (carelessly placed on the platform) took fire, and taking a horizontal direction, exploded in all directions among the assembly. The terror and confusion at such an unforeseen event may be imagined, but hardly described. Several of the ladies had their clothes set on fire--others were injured by the violence with which they were assailed by the exploding rocket. We have heard only of three or four who were severely injured-and these, we understand, not so serious as to endanger their lives.”
