Full Text

The Letheon in Cincinnati--The inhalation of letheon, or sulphuric ether, for the prevention of pain in surgical operation is one of the greatest triumphs of modern surgery. Several experiments have been made by the members of the Medical Faculty in this city, which have been successful. On the 7th inst. the ether was administered to a patient of Dr. Borton (Mrs. Woods) and her arm taken off while she remained in an unconscious condition. An offensive sore upon the left hand (fungus haematodes) rendered amputation necessary. Professors Buchanan, Morrow, and Hill, Dr. Borton and Dr. G. S. Hill participated in this operation. The letheon was administered by Dr. Buchanan--total insensibility followed--the amputation was performed by Dr. G. S. Hill, between the shoulder and elbow, during a profound and motionless slumber of the patient. Consciousness returned in about half an hour, but she could not believe that her arm had been cut off, until she felt for it with her other hand and could not find it--then she was much agitated with emotions of joy and gratitude.--CIN.
