The Carver project, located on South Pryor Road is the largest public project in Atlanta, providing 990 family units which cost approximately ten million dollars to build.
The dedication services held in front of the Thomas H. Slater Elementary School were witnessed by several hundred citizens. J. B. Blayton, Sr., chairman of an advisory committee to the Atlanta Housing Authority, was master of ceremonies at the dedication program.
Speakers included advisory committee members Bishop J. W. E. Bowen, Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, and Robert A. Thompson, along with Dr. Charles Copher of Gammon Theological Seminary, Rev. R. H. Milner and the mayor of Atlanta, William B. Hartsfield.
Mayor Hartsfield told of efforts of the city to provide decent living accommodations for all of its citizens and citing progress made in that direction, said that another large project to be located on Sweatt Road in the Rockdale Park area will be under construction this year.
Mrs. A. R. Hill, manager of the Carver Community responded to the speaker on behalf of the 550 families who have already moved into the project. The David T. Howard High School Band furnished music. A. J. Lewis, principal of Slater School, which was designed as an integral part of the project, also spoke.
