Office of Daily Courier, Natchez, Miss, June 4th, 1866.
To the Officers and Members of the Press Convention, at Jackson, Miss:
Gentlemen:—
I regret exceedingly that it will be out of my power to be present at your friendly and business gathering. As conductor, I believe of the oldest living press in the State, and as one of its oldest laborers, (having donned the editorial harness in Mississippi in 1849,) it would give me unalloyed pleasure to meet with you. As it is, I hope I will not be altogether unremembered. Many of old time associates have passed away; with many others I have not met for years; while many still are nobly conducting professional life, who are strangers to me except in name. My old editorial friend and confrere, Gen. W. W. Wood, will probably be able to be present. He dates back to editorial life to almost boyish days, and is yet incidentally and occasionally connected with it. I have urged him to attend, and trust you will let him share your business labors, and your hours of pleasant re-union. Upon any business matters, which may require the expression of opinion, I think his judgment is excellent, and would be willing that he may be considered as my locum tenens for the occasion.
Queen Victoria was 47 years old on the 24th ult., and in celebrating the day near Toronto, Canada, a cannon exploded and killed two persons.—Ex.
