Hardy county's portion of the state aid to schools this year will be $17,100, according to figures made public at Charleston. The total amount of state aid for all the counties is $714,850.
A requisition for this money has been made on the state auditor and the state treasurer is now sending to the sheriffs of the various counties checks covering the amounts of their respective county quotas.
In a letter to the boards of education State Superintendent Ford said:
Applications for state aid have been carefully checked up. With the exception of a few districts of the state, on a basis of what the district is justly entitled to receive, we reduced the applications from 10 to 20 per cent.
…We still find, after reductions, as indicated above, that we lack approximately $150,000 of having enough funds to furnish aid to teachers, maintenance, coupons of credit and standard schools.
The state superintendent of schools will ask the state legislature to grant an emergency appropriation to cover the deficiency. However, there is no assurance that this emergency appropriation will be granted.
'In case the legislature fails to grant the emergency appropriation we may not be able to furnish more than 88 per cent to 90 per cent of the state aid which we have allotted to the various districts of the state.
"Teachers' salaries of course, come in for first consideration.
"Unless the legislature grants the emergency appropriation there will be no funds available for maintenance and standard schools."
Amounts apportioned to counties near to Hardy include the following: Grant, $14,050; Berkeley, $2,150; Hampshire, $20,250; Hardy. $17,100; Mineral, $6,700; Pendleton $25,450
