" We are informed by letters from Algier of the arrival there, on board a galliot of that regency, of three sailors and a female passenger, who were on board the Modeste frigate which was lately burnt in the Mediterranean. The account they give of the circumstances attending that fatal accident exactly agrees with the deposition of Capt. Gayet. While the Captain and thirty-four of the crew got on the main-mast, fifteen others, of which number were the four who are arrived at Algier, clung fast to the boatswain's spirit, upon which they floated six days, without cloaths or food, subsisting only on their urine and a little sea water. Ten of these unfortunate people perished successively. The sixth day, the five, who had withstood the horrors of this situation, perceived an Algerine galliot approaching them, the Reis of which received them on board with the greatest humanity ; but notwithstanding the care he took of them, one of the five died next day. The surviving four, when they arrived at Algier, Were presented to the Dey, who sent them immediately to the French Consul, and he has dispatched a copy of their depositions to Court, and another copy to the Sheriffs and Deputies of Commerce at Marseilles. It is said that two of the seamen are out of danger, but that the other sailor and the passenger lie in a hopeless condition. The latter came from Marseilles, and was going to her husband, who is settled at the Cape-Shecaw with her daughter about 16 years of age, who is probably amongst the number of those who have perished."

Event Details
Three sailors and a female passenger from the burnt Modeste frigate arrived in Algier on an Algerine galliot. Their account matches Capt. Gayet's deposition. While captain and 34 clung to main-mast, these 15 (including the 4 survivors) floated six days on boatswain's spirit without food or clothes, surviving on urine and seawater. Ten died successively. On sixth day, five spotted Algerine galliot; Reis rescued them humanely, but one died next day. Four presented to Dey, sent to French Consul, who dispatched depositions to Court and Marseilles. Female from Marseilles en route to husband at Cape-Shecaw, daughter probably lost.
