A Duel Prevented!—Information was received at the Police Office yesterday morning, at half past five o'clock, that a duel was on foot, between a Mr. S. and a Mr. B——, and unless prevented, would be fought early that morning at Hoboken. Mr. Justice Hopson was instantly on the alert, and repaired himself to one of the Jersey Ferries, and despatched some officers to the other. It was in season: for the officer had but just arrived at the Barclay street Ferry before the gentleman against whom the complaint was made, (S——.) made his appearance at the Ferry House, and was of course politely taken into custody. He refused to give bail neither to shoot his antagonist, nor suffer himself to be shot, and was taken to prison, where he remained at the last advices. Information was soon afterwards received, that the other party, seconds, doctors pistols, and all, were at the Ferry, and officers were sent to make them captives also. But, on learning the fate of the first principal, and believing that there can be no fighting—"where one side only gives the blows," they prudently "made themselves scarce."
