A Young Girl Beat About the Head and Otherwise Barbarously Treated.
London, Ont., March 10.—A case of extraordinary cruelty was tried at the Police Court yesterday. The charge was laid by Dr. M. Faggent against J. H. Hargreaves, proprietor of the human hair factory in this city. An assault was committed on Annie Sparks, one of Miss Rice's emigrants, who is there employed. The evidence showed that the doctor was called in the other day to attend another girl, and noticing something peculiar about Miss Sparks made inquiries, and was informed that Hargreaves had the habit of beating her about the head so much that he feared she was becoming silly. Furthermore, it turned out that the girl was tied up by the hands with her toes just touching the floor and so kept for hours at a time. She was also locked up in a dark room in the forenoon and was kept there all night. Hargreaves made her remove all her outer garments with the exception of a thin dress for fear she might use them as a bed. The case is one of the most shocking cruelty, and the poor girl is in a precarious condition. Great indignation is expressed against the perpetrator.
