17th Golden Belt Fair Opened Here At Noon Today

WEATHER IS IDEAL FOR WEEK'S EVENT

Exhibits and Midway Offer Best Attractions Seen Here In Years

SCHOOLS GET HOLIDAY

Children to Attend Tomorrow with Free Admissions If Tickets are Obtained from Teachers at School

With exhibits of a highly creditable character and with a midway concededly the best in any recent year, the seventeenth Golden Belt Fair was formally opened here today. There were no set programs or exercises, but all amusements were in place and exhibits had been set up, and the gates were ajar awaiting the crowds looked for in the afternoon and evening.

The midway had been set up and was in operation last night, with a good Monday night crowd on hand. Those who went out for the event were very agreeably surprised at the magnitude of the attractions as to number, and likewise as to quality.

E. J. Fleming, president, and C. M. Hight, secretary and manager, are in charge at the grounds. They anticipate the best fair season they have yet had, provided the weather is favorable during the week. It was ideal today, and the forecast of the weatherman offered just as good for tomorrow.

Wednesday is school day, and Superintendent E. M. Rollins said today that a full holiday would be granted all white schools to permit the children to attend. Free tickets can be had by all school children from their teachers. The day lost will be made up on some convenient Saturday, Mr. Rollins stated.

In addition to the midway attractions the fair is offering a high type of free acts on a stage built near the center of the grounds, and each evening there will be a display of fireworks.

A trip through the exhibit hall will be both entertaining and educational. One of the striking booths is the one erected by E. G. Dorsey, showing the work of the ERA families in canning fruits and vegetables during the past summer. It is an eye-opener as to what has been accomplished in the conservation of food supplies for winter use.

Another booth is that of the home demonstration clubs. There are things in that booth of interest to the women, and some that most of them have not seen before, and which will show them a few things they had not thought of doing. It will bear close inspection.

The Grange booth is striking and immediately catches the eye. Its three wax figures represent three characters in the degree work of the order.

There are, of course, the usual number of exhibits of farm products proper, including cured hams to make one's mouth water, fruits, vegetables, canned goods and the like.

Professor George Blum has a well arranged exhibit showing the work of the vocational classes. There are a number of commercial booths, and in all, the exhibit hall is one of the best seen in a long time here.

For the first time in the history of a Vance county fair, there are two ferris wheels on the midway. Of course, there are numerous other rides. The free acts are given on the stage. Around the fringe of the midway are 14 or more shows, interesting and out-of-the-ordinary.

Golden Belt Fair officials without a doubt have given the patrons of the fair this year the best they have been offered on the present grounds. It is well worth a trip out, and Vance county people owe it to themselves to take it in.
