Letters from Washington report that British forces of 3,000-5,000 men landed at Sandy Point, Virginia, 45 miles from Richmond, possibly aiming to capture the capital. Full Text

Invasion Virginia. Letters from Washington received this morning, inform, that official intelligence had been received there, stating that the British had landed an army of from three to five thousand men at Sandy Point about 45 miles from Richmond. It was conjectured that the capital of Virginia was their object, and it was feared there was not a sufficient force in that quarter, to prevent their getting possession of that important city. After the arrival of the peace fever several of the Virginia members of Congress obtained leave of absence from the House, and were going home to take care of their families. It was feared that the British would encourage a revolt of the negroes and in that case it was thought they would be able to lay waste all the lower part of the state of Virginia. The British are now in the midst of the slave plantations, where there is generally four or five blacks to one white, so that if a revolt should take place, the white people would have no safety but in flight.
