How an Actress Outwitted a Sheriff
From the St. Louis Times, Jan. 2.
For some days past the frequenters of
Deagle's Varieties theatre found their chief
delight in the graceful presentations of a
fair blonde, who, beyond the meed of praise
awarded her acting, was specially notable
for her elegant dressing. During her en-
gagement here she naturally received the
most devoted attention from numbers of
the wealthier frequenters of the theater.
Among these was a certain individual,
whose identity for the present must be hid-
den under the name of Charles Augustus.
A few days before Christmas, Charles
was with his loved one, and the conversa-
tion turned on Christmas presents. The
fair actress modestly suggested to her ad-
mirer-chief that a Christmas present in her
direction would not be amiss. The hint
was apparently taken and she was asked
what particular item of rarity would please
her best. The reply came promptly: "I
have to play a bewitching masculine char-
acter next Monday, and Charles dear, if
you really want to please me, send me a
suit of fashionable clothes that will do
credit both to my figure and your liberali-
ty." Charles thought this about the best
thing she could have, and gave an order to
a popular tailor.
The next morning saw the lady in the
sanctum of broadcloth and measuring
tape. Her figure was duly gauged by the
accommodating artist, and in time for re-
hersal on Monday the suit was handed to
the demoiselle. When she appeared in it,
at night, a genuine triumph ensued, the
beauty of the actress being done full justice
to by the exquisitely fitting garments.
Thus far all was well, and but for the pro-
verbi al unreasonableness of tailors, who
will insist on being paid for their work, all
might still have been well.
Shortly after the goods were delivered.
Charles Augustus was met by the tailor,
when a mild hint was given him that cer-
tain cost was due on account of the mascu-
line clothing of his histrionic flame.
Charles A. responded by referring the build-
er of the duds to the lady herself, ignoring
any liability for the charges and costs of
the suit. This put a complexion on the
case which was both new and unwelcome.
Nevertheless. with true business sang froid,
application was made to the lady for pay-
ment. She was not prepared with the
cash, and, as her engagement was drawing
to a close, the aid of the law was called in,
and an attachment levied on her personal
effects.
This for a time nonplussed the histrionic
