Judge Says Kidnaping Is One of Most Cruel and Heartless Crimes and Is Becoming All Too Prevalent These Days

Warren, Ohio, March 16.—(AP)—Declaring kidnaping is "one of the most cruel and heartless" crimes, and is becoming "all too prevalent," Common Pleas Judge Lynn B. Griffith today sentenced Dowell Hargraves, 31, to life imprisonment for the abduction of 11-year-old James DeJute, Jr.

The judge, who heard the case without a jury, at the request of the defense, found Hargraves guilty of kidnaping with intent to extort money.

Under Ohio law, conviction on such charge, in case the victim is under 12 years, carries a maximum sentence of life. Defense pleas for a recommendation of mercy, which would have reduced the penalty to ten years to 30 years, were ignored.
