While picking the next governor of Alaska appears to be a favorite cocktail hour sport these days, Senator W.L. 'Bob' Lienhann of Fairbanks sets the record straight by pointing out that Republican party rules provide for electing Divisional committees from the precinct levels and until such committees are set up no one has authority to speak for the Republican party in Alaska. He reports the Fourth, his home Division, has held its convention and elected its committee.
'Under these conditions,' adds the Senator, 'it is obvious that none of the self-appointed, self-starters who are clamoring for appointment as Governor have any support except a small group or clique, who apparently seek special privileges if they can put their man in office.'
Meanwhile, there appears to be a complete absence from the lists of potential candidates one sees from time to time of the name of Robert Reeve, the Republican standard bearer in the race for Delegate to Congress last fall.
After all Senator Lodge, a Republican leader, was defeated in Massachusetts, and shortly thereafter was chosen for one of the top spots in the new administration. Appointment of Reeve as Governor wouldn't be setting a precedent because he lost in the Delegate's race.
