"Governor Cleveland says he would prefer as quiet an inauguration as possible," observes the Washington Critic. "He does not want a big demonstration. He says, however, that the matter is not in his hands and will be attended to here in Washington. He is right. It will be attended to here and Governor Cleveland will find out that it is not going to be any small, quiet affair. It is going to be the biggest sort of a time. The town about the middle of February will begin to assume a reddish brown hue. By the 4th of the following month it will be a vivid crimson. And the paint will be so well rubbed in that it will be many days before Washington resumes its natural color and condition of life. Already the preliminary steps are being taken. Some people are endeavoring to get up a little bad feeling by saying that this man or that man ought not to have a prominent part in preparing for the great event. These people will be so promptly sat down upon that they will think there is a pile-driver somewhere in the vicinity. The people of this city cannot afford to squabble in dealing with so national an affair as the inauguration of a President."
