PROVISIONS SUFFICIENT TO COVER THIS MATTER

This Makes B. & V. Charter Available for Boston & Maine to Use in Coming Up This Side of River—Location of New Road Filed With Selectmen.

The important development made public this week in regard to the railroad situation is the organization of the Brattleboro & Vernon Railroad company. The Brattleboro board of trade in 1909 secured and paid for a charter for the Brattleboro & Vernon Railroad company to operate a single or double-track electric railroad from Brattleboro to Vernon and the Massachusetts line and with branches as might be desired, with a right to take property owned by any other railroad corporation not in actual use for railroad purposes and with the right to cross other railroads. It was a very liberal charter and was procured by the board of trade for the purpose of helping the industrial development of Brattleboro and Vernon. The provisions in it in regard to taking other railroad property were put in with express reference to the Central Vermont property as this could have application to no other road.
This makes the Brattleboro & Vernon Railroad company charter usable for the construction of a line for the Boston & Maine from South Vernon to Brattleboro. It gives much more power than could be had under the general law. The local railroad committee has caused the corporation to be organized, and the necessary amount has been subscribed and paid in in cash for the purposes of organization and to start operations. All legal steps have been taken to perfect it. The organization consists of George L. Dunham, president; L. E. Holden, vice-president; C. O. Robbins, treasurer; M. J. Moran, auditor, and Clarke C. Fitts, clerk. These five men are the directors. A location has been filed for line and branches as follows:
1. A main line commencing on Main street in Brattleboro at the corner of Main and Flat streets; thence by a curve to reach line of a survey made by the Boston & Maine engineers for a tunnel route under the Vernon street hill; thence along the Boston & Maine survey for a tunnel route, by way of a tunnel and westerly of Vernon street, possibly taking a little of Vernon street, running in front of the White River Chair company's factory, then practically paralleling the Central Vermont to a point below Broad Brook. Thence overhead, crossing the Central Vermont and thence south-easterly to South Vernon along the original Boston & Maine survey.
2. A branch from the corner of Main and Flat streets along Flat and Frost streets.
3. A branch from where the road crosses Whetstone Brook northerly to connect with the Vermont Valley road.
4. A branch from where the road crosses Bridge street easterly along Bridge street to the Connecticut river.
The committee does not make public what else is being done, but the citizens of Brattleboro may be assured that this organization of the Brattleboro & Vernon Railroad company is a part of the plan which is being pursued and that the Brattleboro & Vernon Railroad company organization will be used solely for the protection of the interests of Brattleboro and Vernon. Just how, the committee does not wish publicly to state.
