"Mr. Johnson ranks with the oldest class of our Engineers He has been employed on the Erie Canal: on a survey of a route for a ship Canal to Oswego : on the Schenectady and Utica Rail Road: the Utica and Syracuse or Syracuse and Auburn Rail Road; the Catskill and Canajoharie Rail Road; and is now one of the principal Engineers on the New York and Lake Erie Rail Road.
"From Mr. Johnson's experience and high character as an Engineer, I am inclined to think his appointment to our work a good one. He has engaged to enter forthwith upon the survey, which I trust will lead to results so favorable as to insure an early completion of this great work-a work not more interesting to the particular section of the State through which it will pass, than it is important to the State and Nation at large, as a State and National work; absolutely essential to give due strength and protection to this important frontier."-Malone paper.
