ATLANTA, Sept. 15. - The Georgia board of education took under consideration today a request for financial aid to Irwin County in fighting a Federal court suit demanding equal school facilities for negroes.
Chairman George P. Whitman Jr., said the board would decide later on the request, made by Irwin County School Superintendent Philip Newborn.
Newborn told the board the entire state would be affected by the outcome of the litigation. Therefore, he argued, the state should help defray the costs.
Attorney General Eugene Cook has declined to intervene in the suit. He held that so far the state is not involved.
The state school board also passed out a series of salary raises and approved the addition of a course for printers at the South Georgia Trade School in Americus.
Ten per cent pay increases were granted teachers in the School for the Blind, the School for the Deaf, the North Georgia and the South Georgia Trade Schools. The boost is in line with increases granted other teachers.
The board authorized raises for employees of the State School Department's vocational, textbook and library division to bring their pay in line with other divisions.
A proposed printers school at Americus will be the first of its kind in the southeast. It will be established, the board decided, as soon as $48,000, the estimated cost, is available.
The course was requested by the Georgia Press Association.
