PUBLIC LANDS, &c.
The House ordered to-day the appointment of a select committee of twenty six members,—one from each State to consider several Resolutions with a Report of the Secretary of the Treasury, relative to the Public Lands in the United States. William Cost Johnson of Maryland, will be the chairman of the select committee which is to have this matter under consideration. At the last session of Congress Mr Johnson made one of the most able and eloquent speeches ever delivered in Congress upon the subject of the Public Lands. He proposes now, and will so report to the House, that the proceeds from the sales of the public lands be given to the several States in the Union according to their population, and representation of each. He proposes further that the States expend the sums received for purposes of education, in the States. If a law to this effect cannot be passed he proposes that the States shall at least pledge themselves to expend the interest upon all sums received for education, expending the principal as they please,— for works of internal improvement, &c.— but reserving a fund equal to the amount of the interest upon the principal of all sums received from the proceeds of Public Lands.
