Gossip Of The
Movie Lots

By Harry Levette

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (ANP)

Anti-atom bomb "peace" petitions are swarming all over the various Negro districts out here, but are not being circulated around such areas as Hollywood and Vine, Sunset and Gower, Beverly Hills' "Miracle Mile," and Seventh and Broadway.

One man commented as follows while petitioners shouted, "Sign, sign!" He said: "Why are these whites swarming all over Central with those Russian petitions? They must be kidding. My brother's in the 24th Infantry in Korea. The commies probably are taking pot shots at him right now."

Incidentally the Korean war has all Hollywood upset. Production departments are shelving new pictures ready to start; draft-age actors are expecting "greetings" in every mail; top men such as Errol Flynn and Darryl Zanuck are arranging their affairs in case they are called back into active service from the reserves.

Films already rolling are being hurried to final fadeouts and the cutting room. Among items that are in production now are Stanley Kramer's "Cyrano de Bergerac" and an RKO Radio short, "Footlight Varieties," a feature which is to use "every kind of entertainment."

Quickies on Filmland

Jean Hersholt has been re-elected president of the Building Corporation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts Sciences for his fifth term, and Jack Warner, re-elected treasurer.

Other officers include Charles Brackett, first vice president, and George Murphy, Charles Skouras, and Fred Metzler, members of the board of directors. Mrs. Margaret Herrick continues as executive secretary.

The new Los Angeles beach at Venice was officially opened last week. Pilgrimage Play (the life of Christ) opened at the Pilgrimage Play Bowl high with Nelson Leigh again playing the role of Christ. Not nearly as many colored patrons are attending as expected.
