The Changing Times
In his first interview with the Mirror some three months ago, Warden Rigg made it clear that he wanted to be known for what he did rather than what he was going to do.
The basketball court, the new volleyball court, the table-tennis equipment, the horizontal bars, the benches, the new baseball and softball equipment have all appeared on the yard gradually and without fanfare.
Sunday afternoon yard periods, the evening ration of hot water, the extra showers for cordage industry workers have gone practically unnoticed because no one made any speeches about them-they just happened.
Increased commissary privileges-the coupon system, the new items available, the new order schedule-are evolving slowly due to the immense amount of planning and paper work necessary.
The new Department of Treatment, probably the most important development so far for men who look forward to solving the enigmas of their behavior, has had little publicity other than routine announcements of appointments. (Certainly, all of the answers to our problems do not lie in the hands of psychology, but we are equally certain that a great many men would not be here today if there had been competent guidance in the crucial moments of their lives. There can be no doubt that this new department will be in a good position to help the men of this institution
With eyes downcast, hands thrust deep in our pockets, and kicking at imaginary clods, we blushingly admit that we don't quite know how to thank the powers that be for services rendered in these past three months
We do know that Men of this institution are aware of these changes and are grateful to Warden Rigg and the staff for them.
