TOKIO, Aug. 15. More than 20 people, half of whom are believed to be Americans, are dead today, burned to death by molten lava on the slopes of Mount Asama-Yama, an active volcano situated about 50 miles northwest of Tokio. Asama-Yama is 8,280 feet high, and its last destructive eruption occurred in 1783, its long inactivity leading the people of Japan to believe that the volcano was dead. It had become the principal summer resort in Japan, and at the time of the eruption many tourists were spending the heated term there. The eruption came without warning and there was no opportunity for the victims to escape.
