FOR THE LITERARY CADET:

Mr. Editor.—I saw a paragraph in your last paper, stating that the Hon. Nehemiah R. Knight, had declined a re-election to the Senate of the United States. The authority which you quoted, was the editor of the Journal, and I would ask permission through your columns to inquire what authority Col. Rivers had for making such a statement. Was he authorised from Mr. Knight, or was it done without any authority at all, and for the purpose of giving that gentleman to 'understand, that he (Col. Rivers) should oppose his election. This is a question I should wish to have answered.

A FREEMAN.

[The above communication was received some days since, from a gentleman residing in the south part of the State, with a request that it might be published, a request which we felt disposed to decline, until we received a second note, when we concluded to give it publicity.]
