Louisville, 11th July, 1807.
SIR,
Your communication of the 7th inst. accompanied by the resolutions entered into at a town meeting on the same day, have just come to hand--I regret, in common with my countrymen, the occurrence which has so justly roused the feelings of our citizens, and while I admire, I feel every disposition to cherish the spirit with which they have so becomingly manifested their indignation at, and abhorrence of such injuries and insults, as have so lately been experienced by our unfortunate fellow citizens on board of the United States frigate Chesapeake.
I will order general David Brydie Mitchell, to hold the militia of his division in readiness to march to any place or places on the sea coast within this state, to resist any aggressions which may be attempted by any British armed vessel in that quarter.
I am, Sir,
With sentiments of high respect and esteem,
Your most obedient servant,
JARED IRWIN.
EDWARD TELFAIR, Esq.
