Well, Folks:

It would seem that the city of Phoenix and the county of Maricopa have, as the saying goes, 'Got the cart before the horse'. I'm referring to the floodlighting of the 16th Street railroad crossing. What will become of those lights when a much needed underpass is installed? Just junk them! It won't have cost the taxpayers but a few unnecessary thousands of dollars. What real good will they have done? Will they have relieved the traffic congestion each morning and evening? No! Will they keep a train from hitting you? No! Will they speed up the train crew's job so that they can keep the crossing clear? No! Just a continual No! No! No!

What should be done? There is only one logical answer! Underpass! Why spend money for floodlights, signals, and other half-way measures? Let's get together and demand an underpass. The traffic is now heavier on 16th Street than it is on 17th Ave. There is only one way that we will get that underpass. If you will just pick up the telephone and dial AL. 8-9611. Ask for Jim Hart, Jim O'Niel or Jim Lindsey. They are your county supervisors. Ask them what they are doing toward the promoting of an underpass? Tell them that the idea of floodlights is just a waste of money as far as you are concerned.

Then dial AL. 8-7313 and ask for Mayor Murphy or anyone of the city council. Ask them the same question. Give them the same opinion about the floodlights.

No telephone? A letter or telegram will be just as effective. In fact, do both. Call and write. They are the groups that will have to get together with the railroad. Enough pressure on them is the only thing that will bring action.

Main Argument

the floodlighting of the 16th street railroad crossing in phoenix is a wasteful half-measure that does not address traffic congestion or safety; an underpass is needed instead, and citizens should pressure county supervisors and city officials to pursue it.
