On Friday last, the Superb of 74 guns, and a brig, having anchored rather too close to the shore, near the Salt-Works, to make it pleasant to the coasting craft. Lt. Col. Benjamin, commanding at Fort Trumbull, ordered in the evening a party of Artillery under the command of Capt. M'Keon, to proceed to the beach with two heavy field pieces, and attack them. Capt. M'Keon commenced his fire at 9 o'clock, and continued it till 11.

Having remained on the ground during the night, furnaces were erected, and the fire was recommenced with hot shot at day break; and occasionally continued till half past 9 o'clock, when the enemy's ships got under way, and the Superb came to at a more respectful distance, and the brig went down sound.

The enemy did not return the fire, and it is not known that they received any injury.
