Temperance Organizations.
The societies for the advancement of the Temperance cause are so numerous, that an individual who loves the cause is without excuse who is not attached to at least one. The advantages, the absolute necessity of union and concert to insure success, are not questioned, and we pity that man whose conscience is so tender that he cannot unite with any of these associations. Or, we would rather say, we commiserate his condition, for we think he is wanting in that principle-that he is destitute of conscience altogether. Persons have said to us,"if you would get up some society with which we could conscientiously unite, we would go with you." This is but a paltry excuse for doing nothing, a mere subterfuge to escape the discharge of duty, a hypocritical or cowardly plea.
What have we in the form of organization? We have "Parochial Societies," Washingtonians, Sons, Templars, Rechabites, Cadets, Daughters of Temperance, Temperance Watchmen, the Carson League, &c., &c. That an individual may not honestly object to some one or more of these Institutions, we are not so uncharitable as to assert, but that he should honestly oppose all of them, and still be a friend of Temperance, is impossible. As well might an individual profess faith in the Christian religion, and yet oppose all the Church organizations in the world. All will agree that such a man must be a fool or a knave. an idiot or a lying hypocrite.
We do not assert that there may not be true friends of temperance who have never joined any Temperance society, but we do insist that no honest man and sincere friend of the cause, withholds his name and influence because there does not exist any society with which he can conscientiously unite.
