The following, dated London, January 10, 1786, is translated from a late Paris News paper.
'A vessel belonging to the East-India company, commanded by Capt. Pearce, sailed from the Downs the 2d of this month for Bengal, and on the 6th was, by stress of weather, cast upon the rocks near the Isle of Portland, and but 50 of the crew were saved. The Capt. with 7 passengers, is among the number that perished—4 of the unhappy passengers were females, two of whom were his daughters, and two nieces—the latter were seen some time floating upon the surface of the water, grasping the Captain's clothes, and at length disappeared with him—he has left a widow and seven children. The ship was 758 tons, 4 years old, one of the finest belonging to the company.—The Ganges, another ship, which was in company, has arrived at Portsmouth in a very shattered condition.'
