Full Text
George Philip, prominent Rapid City attorney, was nominated for congress last night to fill the vacancy caused by the withdrawal of Harry L. Gandy, another Rapid City man.
The nomination was made after a day of secret conference on the part of the democratic state committee. It is understood that the nomination was offered to him but he refused to take it. Several prominent district democrats were then importuned to no effect, and it was only after much urging that Mr. Philip agreed to accept.
Fred S. Rowe of Fort Pierre was by unanimous vote nominated as the democratic candidate for auditor of state also to fill a vacancy.
George Philip is associated with Alvin Waggoner, of Philip, in the law business in Rapid City and Philip. He is rated as one of the leading attorneys of western South Dakota and was formerly deputy United States Attorney, an office which he filled acceptably for eight years. He is highly esteemed in this city and will prove as strong a candidate as the democrats could have chosen. He is a candidate for state's attorney and his acceptance of the congressional nomination will thus leave a vacancy on the democratic county ticket.-Rapid City Journal.
