After Tobacco Trust.
The Independent Tobacco Dealers Association of Chicago claims to have discovered through its secret bureau information that will lead it to take steps to have the tobacco trust investigated by the Federal authorities when it shall have indisputable evidence of the things which have come to its knowledge. It claims to have discovered, also by chemical analysis, that the trust is using material positively injurious to the health in its manufactures.
"Tobacco experts have been employed by our association for some time to investigate this matter thoroughly," said the head of the publicity department of the Independent Dealers' Association. "We have endeavored to ascertain the cause of complaints made by consumers in the habit of smoking these brands.
"The astonishing results of the examination by the experts was that out of seven different brands five were found to be injurious, while the other two contained only the cheapest grades of young and uncured tobacco, which in itself dangerous to the health of the smoker.
"This partly explains the seductive and impossible prices made in the trust stores on goods at six and eight cents that are supposed to be worth ten to fifteen cents, but in reality are worth from three to five cents.
Irrespective of these prices, which are calculated to catch the bargain hunter, such goods should be debarred entirely from the open market at any price.
"With all the tricks and tactics employed by the trust, such as misrepresentations of facts, hiding its identity behind assumed names over the doors of their own stores, causing frenzied finance statements to go out to the public, and what not, we manage to get at the inside of actual facts."
