Major Samuel C. Grashio, survivor of the March of Death who escaped from the Davao Penal Colony after a year of Jap imprisonment, has been assigned as the Redeployment Officer of the Administration and Services Section Hqs. FAF. Major Grashio was a member of the first P-40 group stationed at Nichols Field on Luzon, just prior to the Jap attack in the Pacific. On April 9, 1941, he and the other members of the group, commanded by Lt. Col. "Ed" Dyess, surrendered after the fall of Bataan. The following day the prisoners made the seven-day "death march" to Pampanga, a distance of 135 miles and thence were taken to the horror camps of O'Donnell, Cabanatuan, and finally to Davao Penal Colony. Part of a group of 10 Americans and 2 Filipinos, Major Grashio made his escape through the Philippines to Australia on 4 April, 1943.
