FLYERS ARRIVE

Six Air Derby Entrants Arrive At Calexico On Scheduled Time.

LEAVE FOR PHOENIX

Leaders Make Good Time On Trip To Valley From San Diego.

With the exception of Miss Ruth Barron, who experienced a little engine trouble, all the women flyers in the air derby took off from Calexico airport this afternoon according to schedule.

They were to depart in the order of arrival at the border city, but Miss Barron's delay caused her to get off last, five minutes delay being charged against her.

The time of departure was: O'Donnell, 2:01; Doig, 2:02; La Rene, 2:04; Morgan, 2:05; Stewart, 2:06, and Barron, 2:08.

CALEXICO. Aug. 17. (U.P.) -Gladys O'Donnell, Long Beach, retained her elapsed time lead in the women's air derby when she led the other five contestants on the hop here from San Diego today.

She landed here at 10:41:02 a. m. (PST), after having been in the air only 40 minutes and two seconds.

Margery Doig, of Danbury, Conn., arrived here second at 10:49:45, and was followed by Ruth Barron, Hollywood, 10:51:17; Jean La Rene, Chicago, 10:58:11; Mildred Morgan, Beverly Hills, 10:58:32 and Ruth Stewart, St. Louis, 11:06:43.

Mrs. O'Donnell's fast time from San Diego left her with a total elapsed time of only 1:12:53 since she left Long Beach yesterday.

The standings of the others in the race placed Miss Doig second in 1:21:48; Miss Barron, third, in 1:34:53; Miss Morgan, fourth, in 1:45:01; Miss La Rene, fifth, in 1:50:27, and Miss Stewart, last, in 1:51:12.

The flyers remained here for luncheon and were scheduled to take off at 2 p. m. for Phoenix, the next control point on the flight to the national air races in Chicago.

The withdrawal of several noted women was a disappointment to the thousands who thronged the Long Beach and San Diego airports. The plane of Mrs. Florence Lowe Barnes, holder of the women's air speed record was declared ineligible. Claire Fahy of Los Angeles was ruled out because her motor was excessively powered and Miss Bobbie Trout, also of Los Angeles, was disqualified for having an under-powered craft.

The ladybirds were scheduled to arrive at the third control point, Phoenix, at 4:45 p. m., (MST) today.

Tomorrow they will fly to Tucson, Ariz., and from there to Douglas, Ariz., as the third day's laps. They will reach Chicago and the national air races next Monday.
