Students' Hate Strikes
It is not worth our efforts to attempt to essay the virtue in the students' hate strikes in Gary, Indiana against Negro students. It is all wicked and evil and contagious.
Already it has spread into Chicago schools, and unless the superintendents and other school officials stop temporizing with this intolerable un-American demonstration, it is likely to spread to the proportions of local race riots. The sad irony of it is that the strike leaders are the children of immigrants of first generation Americans--the very people for whom our boys waded through blood in this war in order to defend their homelands against the thing they now seek to perpetuate in our land.
Let us hope fervently that the superintendents and other responsible school officials will rise to the challenge which face them. It would be useless for them to contend that they are powerless to act or that such demonstrations are beyond their control. The public school in one of the corner stones of American democracy and they must not become polluted with foreign notions of class and race distinctions.
