Full Text

Mr Mowry—I was very much surprised to learn that people professed to prefer Mr Arnold to Mr Sprague, because, said they, Mr Sprague is a manufacturer. Now I do not believe in one interest being better than another, but still for the sake of truth I must say, that in this respect there is no comparison between the men. Mr Arnold's whole property is in manufactures, and so far from being a farmer, he is wholly ignorant of the business. Mr Sprague, on the contrary, cultivates 700 acres of land, cuts 180 tons of hay, raises 600 to 1000 bushels of corn, and other crops in proportion, and has 70 to 100 head of cattle: He was bred a farmer, and worked as such from his youth to the present time. He does not merely superintend, but works as hard as his hardest working hands. He has property invested in manufactures, but he does not give all his personal attention to manufactures. Now this is the truth, and I thought I would state it, though many or most would think it of no importance, whether Mr Sprague was a farmer or not.
