Counterattacking Reds Broke Through Last Night South Of Chorwon
TOKYO, April 21.—(AP).—On the battle line, the Allies are running into heavy Red resistance on the central Korean front.
Counter-attacking Reds broke through last night south of Chorwon, and our troops had to beat them off with rifle butts and bare fists. Today, an Eighth Army report said the Chinese were holding out stubbornly on hilltops south and southwest of the rail and road center of Chorwon.
North of the Hwachon reservoir, Red reinforcements were heavily hit by terrific artillery fire. Day-long sharpshooting with big guns routed several Red groups while planes ripped other units north of the reservoir.
Allied troops drove through the town of Hwachon without meeting a single enemy soldier at the west end of the reservoir. Further west we straightened out our line.
Enemy casualties Friday were estimated at 1,155. The Fifth Air Force announced its planes had killed or wounded more than 100,000 Reds since the start of the war last June. That would add up to equivalent of ten to 14 Communist divisions.
