A Firm Hold.

The Fairmont Index: The glorious 47 per cent. tariff is in full force and virtue, and the party of Protection has firm hold of the governmental machine, yet more big failures in industrial channels throughout the country mark the week, and the universal reduction of wages continues to go on. The American workman who must pay from 40 to 80 per cent. taxes on the common necessaries of life, and that too whether employed or idle, whether well or poorly paid, must find it especially difficult in these days to discover the alleged beauties of the Republican scheme to tax the country into prosperity.
