UNHEALTHY: The Negro Medical Society of Charlotte regards as unhealthy a proposal to spend nearly a million dollars at Good Samaritan Hospital. The society plans to bring court action to halt the spending of public funds to maintain a segregated institution. Good Samaritan is operated by the Episcopal Church at present and is to be deeded to the city which plans to renovate it and continue to operate it for Negro patients. The Charlotte Memorial Hospital admits only a limited number of Negro patients. The Negro society's hospitalization committee describes the proposed injunction as an effort to halt the use of public funds to further bar Negroes from the city's only public hospital and extend segregation in the private facility which the city is to acquire. The council acted after a survey of existing facilities recommended fixing the church-owned facility as soon as possible. The city fathers acted two weeks ago, requesting Memorial Hospital to take over the church-owned Negro facility.
