CHATHAM, June 11.

Extract of a letter from Elizabeth Town.

"From the many accounts from West Chester and the neighbouring towns, in the state of New York, near the British posts, the inhabitants of said towns are in the most unhappy situation of any people under the sun. Those called the king's, or loyal refugees, continue in their old practice of beating, burning, hanging, and cutting men and women, in order to extort their money and other effects; which is of late continued and put in practice with the most unheard of cruelties and barbarity that ever was known; especially since the refugees have lost Morrisiana, and now getting all they can to carry off with them to Nova-Scotia, where they say are nine months winter, and three of cold weather in the year. They come from New-York and Long-Island in the night, and skulk about West Chester in the day, and when night comes on again, they exercise the above recited cruelties; so that the inhabitants dare not lodge in their houses. If these poor people are not speedily relieved, they must fall a sacrifice to the greatest monsters of cruelty on the earth.

"The names of some of the chiefs are, Archibald Montgomery, Nathan Hoeg, Henry Quail, Abraham Banker, Archibald Purdy, Jonathan Lovebury, and Stephen Baxter, of Amagansett on Long Island, who has made his boat that he has extorted from the inhabitants to the amount of five hundred guineas for his share."
