"My dear mamma, have no fear of me. We are in sight of the enemy. We are every where triumphant. Your Son is worthy of you. We have at last passed the Rhine. The immortal Army of the Sambre and the Meuse, is a torrent of fire, which has dried up the waters of this River I want expressions to represent the valour of the French Soldiers. The enemy must tell it to you.
If we must lay siege to this place, we shall be here six months or And without doubt it will cost us many brave fellows. But we shall carry it. And should we draw the stones out with our teeth, we will plant, upon the demolished walls of these proud ramparts, now furnished with 450 mouths of fire, the tricoloured flag.
We are at wedding. The Soldier burns to hear the signal guns for action. The fire sparkles in his eyes. His courage is that of a lion. Nothing is so tempting as the works of the enemy. The Republicans disturb neither their strength, nor their thunder. Yet again, believe me, my dear mother, we shall be conquerors.
I embrace your heart and you.
A Corporal, French Republican living and dying."
