The New York Mail and Express
started a member of its staff in a canoe
up the Hudson river, April 10th, with
instructions to proceed to the Pacific
Coast, to empty a bottle of water taken
from the Atlantic ocean at Sandy
Hook into the Pacific ocean at the
mouth of the Columbia river.
It is expected he will end the trip
next October. The route is 7,000 miles
long and passes through or alongside
of seventeen States, between the start-
ing point, at the statue of Liberty, and
Fort Canby, Washington.
The principal water-ways to be
traversed are the Hudson river, Erie
canal, the Ohio, Mississippi, Missouri
and Columbia rivers. The first carry
will be from Lake Erie into Chautau-
qua lake; the next will be at the great
falls of the Missouri, and the third
over the summit of the Rocky moun-
tains.
The voyage is to be made in the
first seamless paper canoe ever con-
structed. It weighs sixty-two pounds,
is fifteen feet in length, thirty inches
beam, depth amidships nine inches,
storage-room forty one feet two inches
both bow and stern, and six feet amid-
ships clear for stateroom. The sail is
a "standing lug," eight feet on the
boom, six feet and six inches on the
head, and five feet gaff. The leach is
ten feet two inches.
