Public Lands. Our attention has been attracted by the following paragraph, stating facts entitled to the attention of our legislators, and highly disreputable to those who have engaged in the speculation it unfolds. The mode of disposing of the national domain is a subject to which the attention of the next Congress cannot be refused; and these occurrences serve to shew that human virtue must not be the basis of the system to be devised. It will also be an enquiry well worth the time employed in it, whether, from various considerations not necessary to be particularized, the Public Lands are not too industriously forced into market by acts of Congress. The proposition, agitated at the last session, to change the mode of disposing of the Public Lands, has been noticed by several writers in the Western papers, of whom some approve and some condemn the proposed change. It appears to us, however, that on this question, among the writers in the newspapers, the ayes have it; and so we hope they will in Congress, when the question comes to be reconsidered there at the next session.
