Full Text

The Indian department has received information concerning Sitting Bull and his bands of hostile Sioux, numbering about 1,500 fighting men, who have been in British territory ever since the unfortunate Custer campaign. They have apparently been behaving themselves, and are well equipped with horses and guns, but are short of ammunition, which the Canadian traders are not allowed to sell to Indians, except under such restrictions as will prevent their obtaining supplies for a campaign. The Canadian officer, from whom the information is derived said that the force of mounted police, only 300 men would be insufficient to drive them out of the country, in case the United States demanded them. It is believed that they intend returning south of the Yellowstone this summer.
