It has always been the trick of knaves, and the failing of weak men when in power, to call opposition to them opposition to the Government; support of them, patriotism, and a condemnation of their measures, treason! When friendship for the government, and the most perfect loyalty. is shewn by this very opposition and condemnation. They may prevent the destruction of our political institutions by folly and crime. The freedom of speech and of the press is promised by our constitution : but in the very case where the allowance of this freedom has any merit, or was intended to be secured, those in power are enraged at its exercise!!
